Frasne-Bouverans
Peat Bog Regional Nature Reserve

Séparateur

The Frasne-Bouverans Peat Bog Regional Nature Reserve is an outstanding natural site spread over 470 acres. Two discovery trails have been created to manage public access to the site so that everyone can enjoy it and learn more about its history and importance.

About the Regional Nature Reserve

The Drugeon valley boasts several peat bogs, all of which are extraordinary natural environments where biodiversity thrives. That’s why we need to protect them while also raising awareness about them. Listed in 2014, the Frasne-Bouverans Peat Bog Regional Nature Reserve is 477 acres of wetland, including prairies, marshes, peat bogs, swamps and reed beds. The role of the reserve is to safeguard these fragile, natural spaces and to inform the public of their importance.

All the more reason to have created specific trails that open up the site without putting its biodiversity at risk. Every year, 20,000 visitors come here to explore these discovery trails and unlock the secrets of the peat bogs.

Discovery Trails

Visitors have access to two walks, one of which has been awarded the French Tourism and Disability label, with two possible starting points.

The short circular walk

The trail starts at the Tourbières car park where the site’s visitor centre is located. It wends its way around the raised bog covering a distance of about 1.5 kilometres. The path is a wooden boardwalk which is suitable for pushchairs and people with disabilities. Seating is provided every 200 metres. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour to walk the trail.

The long circular walk

There are two starting points for this trail:

  • The Tourbières car park, for a 6 km or 2-2½ hour walk
  • The Moulin car park, for a 9 km or 3 hour walk

This trail takes you from the raised bog to the active bog, passing by the Creux du Lard sinkhole and over the Paroi bridge along the way.

Learning can be fun!

Make sure you stop at the interpretation panels dotted along the trails. They provide a wealth of information about wetlands, peat bog formation, the impact of climate changes, sinkholes, flora, fauna and more. You can also stop in at the visitor centre to pick up a visitor’s guide and an audioguide free of charge. Or why not download this mobile app to explore the peat bogs in a fun way?

A Few Important Rules

For your own safety and to protect the site, it is forbidden to stray off the path, even on foot.

In addition:

  • Bikes are not authorised on the wooden boardwalks and walkways
  • Dogs must be kept on a leash
  • Do not remove any plants or animals

By following these simple rules, you are helping to keep this unique and very fragile site alive and safe.
